Victoria Wheelers

The Victoria Wheelers Cycling Club is a non-profit society that is based on the southern region of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. This is the oldest running club in Victoria, with more than 50 years of community activity. The Victoria Wheelers aim to promote, assist and carry out the use and appreciation of bicycles for sport, recreation, and transportation for cyclists of all skill levels and age groups. They aspire to support all levels of cycling, healthy lifestyles, and community interaction.

This section should provide resources for the events that the Victoria Wheelers host throughout the season and be used as evidence of their efforts to make Victoria the best place to ride your bike!

Group Rides

Your Victoria Wheelers’ club membership and Cycling BC Insurance has to be current. Visitors are welcome, please arrive ahead of time and introduce yourself to the ride leader who will get you up to speed on paperwork and route. After you’ve enjoyed 2 group rides and you want to get involved more, the Victoria Wheelers strongly encourage you to become a club member and get Cycling BC Insurance (mandatory).

SATURDAY RIDE

9am, OBB parking lot

The Saturday Ride is usually led by a rotating mix of ride leaders.. It begins at 9am sharp in the OBB parking lot, and is designed to be an intermediate to advanced ride.

For this ride, riders should be able to achieve 30-35km/hr average on flats, and the ride is typically 80-100 km.

Riders should know how to ride within a group, and must have own tools/extra tubes.

THIS IS A DROP-RIDE!

SUNDAY RIDE

Temporarily Suspended due to COVID-19

9am, OBB parking lot

This 80 km ride is STEADY and SOCIAL. Overall average speed ranges between 28-30km/hr.

Cyclists without group riding experience are welcome, provided you have the fitness to maintain the speed of the group. Experienced ride leaders will coach you on group ride etiquette and safety. The focus is respecting the rules of the road and safety in a group.

If you are unable to maintain the speed for the entire ride, stay with us as long as you can, keep working on your fitness, and join us again the following week.

In the rainy season, and/or road conditions anywhere along the route can be expected to be wet, fenders with extensions are mandatory.

MONDAY NIGHT RIDE

Temporarily Suspended due to COVID-19

These rides are designed to be a social spin – and riders should be able to maintain a 24-27km/hr average yet “conversational” pace. The route will vary from week to week, but a 40-60 km ride can be expected.

Some group riding experience is good, but not mandatory. The Victoria Wheelers adhere to no-drop policy with the occasional “sprint”, hill climb or short gravel/dirt section followed by a re-grouping point.

The rides are meant to showcase some of Victoria’s best roads – waterfront, deep forest, farmland and urban areas. Hopefully, our riders will learn some new routes to keep the riding fresh!

The Fernwood Inn has once again graciously offered up some patio space for post ride beverages, snacks and meals – bring along a few dollars and enjoy the best chicken wings in town! Please bring adequate front & rear lights to ensure a safe ride home.

In case you missed the Victoria Wheelers‘ annual GEAR SWAP and/or their SPECIAL SATURDAY RIDE you can contribute to Shim’s rehab via this link: https://www.gofundme.com/f/pulling-together-for-mathew

All proceeds from this ride and last year’s Gear Swap went to Shim who was involved in a serious accident with an automobile that’s left him requiring long term rehab. Shim is the kind of guy that is always up for the next hill or the next attack. We have no doubt he’ll push through this as he has always approached adversity: hard as nails.
