Employee Bike Check: Brendan's Dekerf-Built 1998 Rocky Mountain Blizzard

One of the most storied names in BC mountain biking history, Rocky Mountain has been offering bikes to Canadian customers since 1981. The Blizzard was a mainstay of the lineup, and usually meant high end steel tubing and an equally nice component group. That's why when Brendan saw this '98 Blizzard pop up on UsedVic for a great price, he jumped on it. What he found in a dusty Cadboro Bay garage was a near-mint, limited edition example built by BC legend Chris Dekerf, completely stock down the to blue anodized Race Face triple.

When a bike is that mint, it doesn't need much, and making changes can feel like destroying a priceless work of art. So that's why Brendan initially kept it stock, enjoying it exactly as it rolled off the line back in 1998. But after a few years, riding the 24-year-old Marzocchi Bomber just wasn't that fun, and it was time for an update. A suspension-corrected rigid fork was swapped in, along with Surly Sunrise bars, a Premium Products BMX stem, and some nice fat 2.3" Maxxis DTH's. These simple upgrades transformed the bike into a chill upright commuter that can still get a little rad when required. Check out a gallery of Brendan's killer Blizzard below!

Original Race Face triple. The crank is the star of the show, but those rings are spectacular too.
Ritchey Logic steel tubing. This is one of ~750 Canadian-made frames built in 1998.
Shimano Deore XT M737 components all around.
Blizzards were occasionally offered in other colours, but most were white.
Chad Kerley signature stem from Premium Products. Chad's a cool guy, and this is a cool bike so it's a good match.
Wide and upright Surly Sunrise bars for a comfortable riding position.
