Time Change will bring out
more bicycles -
Road users urged to be aware of one another
Nanaimo, B.C. Warmer weather and longer days will encourage
even more people to choose a bicycle as a means of getting
around.
The time change means an extra hour of daylight at the end
of each day, and darker morning hours. As more cyclists take
to the road, Bike to Work Nanaimo and the City of Nanaimo
want to remind all road users to be aware of and be
courteous to each other.
"This is the earliest that we have ever changed the clocks,"
says Nanaimo RCMP Constable Dale Somerville, "all road users
must be very aware of this and cyclists and pedestrians must
make sure to be visible and drivers need to really pay
attention and watch for other road users. Cyclists are
required by law to use a white front light (visible for 150
metres), a red rear light and reflector (visible for at
least 100 metres) and they must wear an approved helmet."
Safe roadways require road users to work together to give
each other sufficient space. "People may not realize that
cyclists are legal road users," says Stephanie Johnson,
Executive Director of Bike to Work Week. "Cyclists are
safest when they ‘drive’ like a car. This means taking
enough space to be safe and communicating clearly with other
vehicles."
With rising fuel costs and a growing awareness of the need
to lower greenhouse gas emissions from our daily lives, now
is the perfect time to consider another way to get to work,"
adds City of Nanaimo Environmental Planner Rob Lawrance.
"With Bike to Work week coming up from June 2nd to 8th, now
is a great time to see if cycling is the way to go for you."
In partnership with local sponsors, Bike to Work Nanaimo
will be hosting a special "kick off" event on Thursday April
24th from 11am to 2pm in Library Square in Downtown. Come
down and meet your friendly neighbourhood cycle shop rep.
You can even bring your bike down for a check up. And sign
up to challenge your co-workers during Bike to work week.
The Bike to work week event is scheduled for Monday June 2
through Sunday June 8, 2008.
